Drawdown, and the arithmetic of getting back

A drawdown is the fall from an account's peak to its lowest point before a new peak is set.

The arithmetic is unforgiving: after a 50% loss, you need a 100% gain just to return to where you started. Small drawdowns are the ones you can climb out of.
